Recharter for 2013!

'Tis the season!....For Recharters!!! Yes, the Council Website is still under construction, however you can access your internet recharter portal through MyScouting.org sign in on. Once logged in to MyScouting.org on the left side of the screen under "Unit Tools" you will see a link for Internet Recharter.

In the Internet Recharter Portal Please remember to logon as a NEW USER and look over your Rosters VERY carefully to make sure no one is left off your recharter! Your recharter codes are highlighted on the top right corner of your Recharter Packets you should have received at your District's November Roundtable meeting.

"Recharter Day" deadline is December 15th but I HIGHLY recommend getting your Recharters in before that day to beat the rush and the lines in the Scout Shop.

On December 15th, You Can turn in your Recharters with Payment at the following locations and times:

9:00am-3:00pm at the Scout Shop/Service Center in Newport News

10:00am-1:00pm @ the Gloucester Courthouse Public Library

If you have not received your unit's packet or have any other questions regarding recharter, please email me at kelly.allan@scouting.org. Thanks!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

The ScoutNet System and MyScouting site is experiencing many glitches. If after you submit and print your recharter paperwork you are seeing multiple entries for one person...just cross the erroneous lines off in pen and initial. If there are Adult Members on your "Adults who have not received Youth Protection Training" Report erroneously, please include a copy of their YPT Certificate. If you need to have your recharter reset and start over, please email Kelly Allan. For any other problems other than what is listed above FIRST check the FAQs and HELP links in the Internet Recharter Portal and if you still have trouble,

call 972-580-2267.

Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award

The Outdoors Programs Support Committee and the Outdoor Ethics Task Force of the General Services Group has approved revisions to the BSA's current Leave No Trace Awareness Award for Cub Scouts and Leave No Trace Achievement Award for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts. Effective January 1, 2013 the current BSA Leave No Trace Awards will be replaced with a universal Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award and an Outdoor Ethics Action Award tailored to each BSA program.

The New Outdoor Ethics Award Program has three components:

  • The Awareness Award -which is an award tailored for youth and adults just joining the BSA program that introduces them to BSA outdoor ethics principles, such as Outdoor Code and the principles of Leave No Trace. The award is a patch and is earned once by any BSA member.
  • The Action Award - which is an award tailored for youth that have been participating in the BSA program for awhile and wish to deepen their understanding of outdoor ethics and improve their skills in implementing those outdoor ethics. This is primarily a youth award, although an adult counterpart that recognizes adults who support youth in earning the award. The award is a specially-designed name tag and may be earned at each BSA program level (initially, Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, Scouter in support)
  • Service Recognition - which recognizes youth or adults who have completed advanced training as a Leave No Trace trainer or Master Educator or Tread Lightly Trainer or AMster Tread Trainer, or have served as a council Outdoor Ethics Advocate or staffer on training courses, and have used that training to help teach others outdoor ethics principles. The service award(s) are reflected on the specially-designed name tag referenced above and can be earned once by a qualifying BSA member.

University of Scouting
JANUARY 12, 2013

Dear Fellow Scouters,

What keeps youth in Scouting? Program, program, program!! Need ideas and resources for your program? We have what you need! Experience great instructors and excellent training content, with a delivery focused on what unit leaders need for an exciting year of Scouting that will wow the youth – and thus, retain them!

The University of Scouting provides course offerings in four colleges. Three colleges are devoted to the major Scouting programs – Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing. The General College offers classes of interest to Scouters across all programs. If you have attended several past Universities of Scouting, you may be interested in the College of Doctoral Studies.

Displays will be presented for your program needs. You can talk with the PowderHorn course director and find out if this exciting opportunity is for you! As always, the Scout Shop has graciously agreed to support us with supplies and materials for you to purchase.Tuition is the same no matter how many courses you choose, although a couple of classes may have an additional fee to cover material costs, and those are listed inthe course catalog. I’m guessing you will have a hard time limiting classes to a full day of 6 sessions and lunch.

Lunch is included with your registration fee. Please let us know of any special dietary concerns, and we will work to accommodate them. The Wood Badge Association will be offering coffee, treats, and other goodies for purchase throughout the day.

On behalf of the Colonial Virginia Council Training Committee, the deans of each college, and the entire event committee, I encourage you to join us for this training adventure. We will see you on the 12th of January—bring 5 friends!
