Newport News Boy Scout Troop 6 Honors Record 10 Eagle Scouts

It was a banner year for Boy Scout Troop 6 in Newport News, with 10 new Eagle Scouts completing requirements in 2012 and being honored at a recent banquet.

Ten is a record high number and five is the most Eagle Scouts the troop has ever had in one year in the past, said Troop 6 Assistant Scoutmaster Chris Wirt, whose two sons attained the Eagle Scout rank.

"We never expected this many would go," Wirt said. "The most we've ever had in a given year is five in the 80s or early 90s. So when we saw we were having this many, we tried to cheer them on and encourage them because we really did want to set a record year for Troop 6."

The new Eagle Scouts are Alexander Wirt, Tim Klimchock, Connor Wirt, Alex Pintuff, Ryan McManus, Ethan Mobley, Jeb Pickford, Nick Adams, Bobby Boyle and Val Pickford. All but three live in Newport News, with McManus residing in York County and Jeb and Val Pickford living in Hayes.

They were honored at a banquet Jan. 12 at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News. That church chartered Troop 6, which was formed in 1924.

Harold Sawyer is the Scoutmaster for Troop 6.

Former Newport News Mayor Joe Frank, also an Eagle Scout, was the banquet's keynote speaker. Dr. William Peach, who in 1947 became the third Eagle Scout in Troop 6, was a special guest for the event.

Also in attendance were Richard Johnson, district director for the Boy Scouts, several former scoutmasters of Troop 6, and many family and friends.

In a typical year the troop will have one or two scouts make Eagle, Wirt said. A double digit number is highly unusual.

Scouts usually start working toward the Eagle rank at about age 10 or 11, and must complete the requirements before age 18. They typically finish between age 16 to 18, but not younger than 15.

"Making Eagle Scout is a fairly intensive process," Wirt said. "There are several ranks you have to go through to get there, then just getting from the second highest rank of Life up to Eagle is a fairly intensive process."

To reach the Eagle rank, scouts have to work a job in the troop for six months, complete another certain number of merit badges, do a service project in the community where they lead other boys in a leadership role, submit paperwork and go before a Boy Scouts board of review their record.

"We started off the year knowing that we had some that were getting close to being able to make Eagle, but it's on the candidate to get themselves in gear to finish the requirements, especially the service project," Wirt said. "Both my sons made Eagle this year, and the project took several months from planning to completion."

The local Boy Scout council reviews the paperwork and then it goes to a national office for review, all of which got completed in time for all 10 scouts to qualify for Eagle in 2012.

"These things can take a couple of weeks or four or five weeks," Wirt said. "It wasn't assured that these guys would make it, but I guess it all fell into place."
